BREAKING NEWS -- IT'S OFFICIAL:
USTA League Age Restructuring To Start in 2013: Adult 55s, 65s, 75s in Southern
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The breaking news came in a phoner this morning from South Carolina Super Senior Coordinator Bonnie Sue Duncan, reporting on decisions at Southern Section meetings over the weekend.
Previously announced: USTA National will go to Adult 18 & Older, Adult 40 & Older and Adult 55 & Older, supplanting the current Adult 18s, Senior 50s and Super Senior 60s. The new National divisions leaves open the way open for a National 65s should sufficient numbers warrant.
The new Adult 55s, 65s, 75s -- forget the words "Senior" and "Super Senior" -- will continue as straight level divisions of 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 in Southern. However, the 2013 Southern Adult 65s will offer a 9.0 level. The 2013 National Adult 55s championships will continue the ongoing combo 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 format.
As of now, the 2013 South Carolina Adult 18s and 40s state championships will be in the Spring and the Adult 55s, 65s and 75s state championships will play in the late Fall. However, it will be a local decision as to when local leagues are played. That is, for example, Hilton Head Island and/or Coastal Carolina could decide to play the 65s local league in the Spring.
"South Carolina has the largest Super Senior participation in Southern," Duncan said. "We are proud of our proud of our Seniors growth and expect the new format to increase the numbers."
Stay tuned for much more detail.
NOTE: The USTA is divided into 17 sections nationally, with USTA Southern the largest. The 185,000+ USTA members living in Southern's nine states account for approximately 25% of the total USTA membership.

Oh, To Be 10 & Under Again .......................
Okay, so you might not want to be 10 & Under again. I don't either. But for those who are, the U.S. Tennis Association has a $$ blockbuster budget aimed to bring many thousands into tennis through a Little League-sort of short court with larger balls and special format geared to the youngsters.
Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina clubs have adopted the USTA program, much of which grew out of ideas and teaching patterns conducted here for years. Courts built specifically for the 10 & Under QuickStart format, however, are new ... like those at the just-opened Tennisclub at Rose Hill.
In this issue, a rundown of 10 & Under and QuickStart programs in our area are posted and will be updated as received from individual clubs. The programs are open to resident kids as well as visiting grandkids and such.
Also available from the USTA is a free annual membership for any 10 & Under. This free offer ends Dec. 31. Check your club for free application forms. If unable to find one, email banana@hargray.com and one will be sent to you.
Here are the area QuickStart and 10 & Under programs made available to TENNIS E-News thus far. Check back later for updates.

South Beach RC Director
Michael O'Keefe Heading for Park City, Utah, as Director of Tennis
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Michael O'Keefe, for five years South Beach Racquet Club director of tennis, has been named tennis director of the Park City Municipal Area Recreation Center in Utah. A former Ithaca College tennis team captain and head pro at Van Der Meer Tennis, O'Keefe has directed the South Beach instruction programs and tournaments, including the popular annual BillyBob Century Cup Doubles.
The Park City facility (PC MARC) is in the heart of the area that hosted the skiiing portion of the 2002 Winter Olympics. It is an 11-court indoor/outdoor facility that hosts several USTA tournaments, including the Men's 45 Indoors. The town of Park City has recently committed $10 million dollars to upgrade the rec facilities, centerpiece of which will house four indoor tennis courts that will join the existing three-court bubbled courts right outside. Two of the indoor courts will be multi-use -- lined for USTA 10 & Under as well as normal play. Also to be added: a large fitness area, indoor running track that will circle the courts, an indoor climbing wall and a bouldering area. (You'll have to ask Michael to explain "bouldering".)
In addition to his HHI experience at Van Der Meer and South Beach, O'Keefe was an integral cog in organizing the highly successful Hilton Head Island Pro Tennis League last Spring.
O'Keefe will be leaving HHI Oct. 7, to be joined by his wife Helaine and daughter Phelan when the latter gets a holiday break from school here.
At Park City, O'Keefe will be tasked with building and enhancing a thriving junior program, building more community programs for first time and existing players and three, marketing to the west coast and midwest to attract groups and teams to come, play and vacation in Park City during the summer and fall.
"I want to thank (SBRC owners)
Don and Rachel Sigmon for giving me the best teaching job in Hilton Head," said
O'Keefe, while promising to be
back in May for a Pro League Match ... right after his to-be-named replacement
finishes his/her first BillyBob event.
