South Beach RC Director
Michael O'Keefe Heading for Park City, Utah, as Director of Tennis
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Michael O'Keefe, for five years South Beach Racquet Club director of tennis, has been named tennis director of the Park City Municipal Area Recreation Center in Utah. A former Ithaca College tennis team captain and head pro at Van Der Meer Tennis, O'Keefe has directed the South Beach instruction programs and tournaments, including the popular annual BillyBob Century Cup Doubles.
The Park City facility (PC MARC) is in the heart of the area that hosted the skiiing portion of the 2002 Winter Olympics. It is an 11-court indoor/outdoor facility that hosts several USTA tournaments, including the Men's 45 Indoors. The town of Park City has recently committed $10 million dollars to upgrade the rec facilities, centerpiece of which will house four indoor tennis courts that will join the existing three-court bubbled courts right outside. Two of the indoor courts will be multi-use -- lined for USTA 10 & Under as well as normal play. Also to be added: a large fitness area, indoor running track that will circle the courts, an indoor climbing wall and a bouldering area. (You'll have to ask Michael to explain "bouldering".)
In addition to his HHI experience at Van Der Meer and South Beach, O'Keefe was an integral cog in organizing the highly successful Hilton Head Island Pro Tennis League last Spring.
O'Keefe will be leaving HHI Oct. 7, to be joined by his wife Helaine and daughter Phelan when the latter gets a holiday break from school here.
At Park City, O'Keefe will be tasked with building and enhancing a thriving junior program, building more community programs for first time and existing players and three, marketing to the west coast and midwest to attract groups and teams to come, play and vacation in Park City during the summer and fall.
"I want to thank (SBRC owners)
Don and Rachel Sigmon for giving me the best teaching job in Hilton Head," said
O'Keefe, while promising to be
back in May for a Pro League Match ... right after his to-be-named replacement
finishes his/her first BillyBob event.
