Lisicki Figures Out the Weather to Win First Round at Family Circle
Cup
CHARLESTON SC (TENNIS E-News) --
Storms that blew through the Lowcountry delayed start of the Family Circle Cup
two hours today, then played havoc on every court the day long. It took a while,
but the opening match for 2009 champion Sabine Lisicki was a wild adventure
before she figured things out in her third set. Fans sat wrapped in blankets as
the temps dropped and the wind rose at Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island.
The German former champion Lisicki was unable to defend her title last year because of an injury and received a wild card into this week's tournament. Today she defeated Renata Voracova of the Czech Republic and next will face #4 seed Marion Bartoli of France. Blustery conditions did not bode well for USA's Melanie Oudin, now ranked #75 who lost in straight sets to World #93 Tamira Paszek of Austria.
The $721,000 championships drew more than 16,000 spectators during qualifying rounds Saturday and Sunday, with larger attendance expected the rest of the week. Included in the Wednesday USTA Member Appreciation Day crowd will be a busload of spectators from Country Club of Hilton Head.
India's #1 Mirza, who Monday defeated Alison Riske of Hilton Head Island in three sets, pulled out another one against American Vania King 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2.
Caroline Wozniacki, Sam Stosur, Jelena Jankovic and Marion Bartoli are marquee names scheduled for play Wednesday. The tournament will run day and night through Sunday.
FCC features special days and nights throughout the tournament, including Wednesday's USTA Member Appreciation Day. Charleston celebrated its Best Tennis Town award at tonight's matche. Saturday night's "Game, Set, Rock! Tennis Presented by Dove" will feature music and tennis by John McEnroe, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Todd Martin in singles and mixed doubles.
FCC and its parent company, Meredith Corp., have partnered with Subaru of Charleston and the American Red Cross in a tsunami relief effort, with all proceeds benefitting the Red Cross Japan relief program. Each tournament day until 1 p.m. Sunday fans can guess the number of tennis balls inside a Subaru Forrester on-site at the Family Circle Cup for $5 per entry. The closest guess will win the use of a Subaru Forrester for 90 days. Top-seed Caroline Wozniacki has donated two Player Box seats for a match, as well as a private meet and greet after the match. World No. 5 and defending FCC champion Samantha Stosur has donated a private 30-minute hitting session including her and her coach during the tournament.
Meredith Corp. holds an annual charity auction with VIP guests during the tournament, and 50 per cent of all proceeds at this year’s event Friday will be donated to the Japan relief effort. Also, $2 for every patron who attends the finals Sunday will go to the fund.
Single
session tickets for Wednesday and Thursday day sessions are $45 and $55;
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday nights are $20 and $30. For more ticket
