Just a Couple Weeks to 1st Matches
Ladies and Gentlemen, Your Engines Have Been Started
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- USTA League/HHI team captains got their final marching orders Wednesday, the bottom line being that match play will begin in about three weeks. All hands on board by early February.
Some of the schedules already are posted on TennisLink. Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke and level coordinators will gather this weekend to complete that task on the big-number levels like Men's and Women's 3.5s. The 2011 Local League Rules for Adults and Seniors are awaiting final approval at State and will be uploaded to www.tahhi.org when final okay comes in -- expected next week.
To the packed house of captains, Reynecke noted a few new tweaks in the regulations, among them that the local cooordinators will take the bull or cow by the horns to settle quickly disputes involving double rainouts -- that is, when a rained-out match's rain date also is rained out and if's and but's start flying.
Teams have committed to roster-filling now with match schedules about to be released. A team will have until March 13 to add players. "A player must be added before midnight the night before playing in a match," Reynecke warned, urging all captains to print out TennisLink blank scorecards the day of the match because those will show all eligible players on the team roster.

A New Let Rule To Watch -- You'll Lose the Point No Matter If ...
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- You might have missed it in the Jan./Feb. issue of TENNIS, so here is the rule change:
"For 2011, the USTA has approved changes to The Code that simplify the rules for reversed calls. In short: If you change a call from out to in, you lose the point, no matter if you returned the ball in play. Until this year, The Code Item 12, called for a let in this situation, as long as the player who changed the call didn't hit a return that could be deemed a 'weak sitter.' The amended Item 12 says, 'The point goes to the opponent and is not replayed.' The Code now mirrors the rules of college tennis in this regard."
TENNIS E-News Tip: You damn well better print this out and carry it in your racket ball to all your matches -- "for fun" ones or otherwise.
Road to Aussie Open
What's Happening With Ali Riske in Australia
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News from ITF Tennis) -- Allison Riske, the Pittsburgh area native who lives and trains on Hilton Head Island, is off to a good start Down Under in the first of a couple week's tournaments leading to the Australian Open that begins Jan. 22.
The 20-year-old Riske, ranked #115 in the world as of last weekend, won her first round of the Brisbane International Qualifying Draw by defeating Olga Savchuk of Ukraine 6-4, 6-3, then in the Round of 16 took out Czech Andrea Khlavackova 6-0, 6-3. In the qualifying final, however, she lost to World #86 Vania King of Monterey Park CA 6-3, 7-6(3).
