Loss of a 'Killer B' -- Former active HHI tennis player Brenda Bourdage has died unexpectedly. She and husband Bob, who moved to Greensboro GA several years ago, were nicknamed the "Killer B's" for their tenacious and successful play and captaining in local leagues and tournaments. Brenda had not been ill. No further details. Family address: 1001 Swordhilt Road, Greensboro GA 30642.

     70s Men's Interclub League Organizing for Spring Season; 3.5s and 4.0s on Same Team

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The USTA Leagues have their Fall/Winter Interclub seasons that serve as roster and partner building for the Spring seasons. In 2011, USTA Super Senior players will have a 70s Interclub "Spring training" for the Fall SS season ... except it won't be a USTA league or have USTA fees.

    The Men’s 70s Spring Interclub League is planning its inaugural season on Hilton Head Island with club teams made up of 3.5 and 4.0 players, who must be 70 or older as of 12/31/2011. Format will be similar to the Fall/Winter Men's Interclub -- three doubles courts -- but stipulating that 4.0s must play on #1 court. Teams will be encouraged to play a fourth court each week.

    The 70s SIL coordinators Dick Sonberg of Sea Pines CC, Don Ross of Indigo Run and Dennis Malick of Spring Lake are planning an eight-week season beginning Thursday, Feb. 17, and continuing on Thursdays, possibly skipping a week for special events. The schedule will be expandable or contractible depending on number of teams entered. No league fee will be collected other than a minimal per-team fee to fund season end playoff/party. Teams will be responsible for any expense on their home matches.

    Pre-registration deadline for intention of entering a team will be Jan. 4, 2011. A roster deadline for minimum of eight (8) players will be Jan. 20. Most of the club teams and players are expected to be from the six 70s 3.5 and two 4.0 teams that competed in the 2010 Super Senior season.

     Julie Jilly Receives USTA Service Award in Myrtle Beach
        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The USTA Southern State Volunteer Service Award was presented to HHI's Julie Jilly at the USTA South Carolina Annual Meeting in Myrtle Beach. The award was presented by USTA SC President Paul Pittman.

    A Professional Tennis Registry vice president of operations, she serves on the USTA National Wheelchair Tennis Committee, as well as the USTA Southern and USTA South Carolina’s Wheelchair Tennis and Tennis Teaching Pro Relations Committees. She also volunteers for the Island Recreation Association, serving as president of the Board of Directors twice.  

    For five years, Jilly has been an integral part of the Dove Street Committee for the Deep Well Project.  In September 2010, she was presented Hilton Head Island’s Citizen Honor Award for her volunteerism and personal commitment to the betterment of our community.   Additionally, Jilly has been honored by Special Olympics for her tireless efforts engaging special athletes in tennis.
    Hilton Head Islanders also honored at the ceremonies were Ashley Kitchen with the Mark Hodgin Junior Girl Sportsmanship Award and Terry Kinard with the 2010 Pete Conklin Official of the Year Award.

How to find your Year-end Rating ...

    Go to www.sctennis.com, then (on the left column) select TennisLink, then click on "USTA League" photo and you get the League home page. On the right, under "League Players" select "Find a Rating". Then type in your USTA # or name and click on "Go". That's your 2010 year-end rating and the rating at which you will play during 2011. If under Year-end Date, it shows 12/31/09, that is your old rating and the new one has not been posted. 

    Unhappy with the rating? Well, to the right of the Year-end Date, it reads: Appeal rating. If that is NOT there, you can't appeal. If it is, click and follow directions.

    If you want to find the ratings of your teammates, instead of your name or USTA #, input your team number or their names individually. By selecting the dropdowns, you can find out all the new ratings for the entire area. Happy hunting.
