In-group Play Ends Saturday

Port Royal, Long Cove, Sea Pines, Sun City Lead Way at 2-0 in Super Senior Sectionals

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- South Carolina's first hosting of the Southern Section Super Senior Championships opened play today and Port Royal men and women and Long Cove, Sea Pines and Sun City women each won two matches in in-group play.

This weekend has brought the event to its birthplace on the 15th anniversary of what started on Hilton Head Island and has evolved into national championships. Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club  will be headquarters site for the championships that also will have matches at Port Royal, Long Cove, Sea Pines Country Club, Palmetto Dunes and South Beach.

Port Royal's 60s Men's 4.0 got off to an early start, winning 2-1 over GA/Atlanta on a third-set match tiebreak. They won two third-set match tiebreaks in an all-TB 2-1 win over AL/Birmingham in the afternoon.

Long Cove's 60s Women's 4.5 swept their first match against GA "A" team from Atlanta -- all in straight sets. In the afternoon, it came down to a TSMT on Court One to come up with a 2-1 victory over NC "B"/Greensboro.

Sea Pines CC made a really clean sweep of its two matches in the 70s Women's 3.0: a pair of 3-0 wins, losing a total of only three games in the first against GA/Columbus and four against AL/Gulf Shores.

The Sun City Racquettes awakened early to take a 3-0 win in the 60s 3.0 over MS/Lake Village, then came back in the afternoon for a 2-1 win over AR "B"/North Little Rock. All six of the Racquette matches were straight sets.

Port Royal's Senior Senoritas took two courts in straight sets from GA/Columbus Cooper Creek, while losing one TSMT in the 70s Women's 4.0 and added a 3-0 win in the afternoon over LA/Metairie in three straight-set matches.

More than 900 players are competing from Southern's nine states -- Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, with 42 teams in 60s and 24 in 70s. Matches will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday and continue through the weekend to Sunday finals.

To the number of men and women playing this year's championships, add the spouses, significant others and campfollowers and the Hilton Head Island economy will receive a $1.5 million holiday season "gift" from the tennis world ... just for this weekend. That will match the take from the USTA South Carolina Senior State Championships in May that has just renewed a three-year contact. The Southern Championship will return in December 2011.

Here are today's results and the schedule, as gleaned from TennisLink, involving the HHI and CCTA teams. Note that schedules do change occasionally; keep in contact with your team captain:

The Year-end Ratings are UP!!

How to find your Year-end Rating ...

Go to www.sctennis.com, then (on the left column) select TennisLink, then click on "USTA League" photo and you get the League home page. On the right, under "League Players" select "Find a Rating". Then type in your USTA # or name and click on "Go". That's your 2010 year-end rating and the rating at which you will play during 2011. If under Year-end Date, it shows 12/31/09, that is your old rating and the new one has not been posted.

Unhappy with the rating? Well, to the right of the Year-end Date, it reads: Appeal rating. If that is NOT there, you can't appeal. If it is, click and follow directions.

If you want to find the ratings of your teammates, instead of your name or USTA #, input your team number or their names individually. By selecting the dropdowns, you can find out all the new ratings for the entire area. Happy hunting.
