Sun City def. Spring Lake in Sr. 3.5 Final
Swinging Singles, Singles Ladies, Hampton Lakers Win State Championships
ISLE OF PALMS SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Hilton Head Island's Singles Ladies and Swinging Singles and Coastal Carolina Hampton Lakers finished off their run of unbeaten matches today, winning championships in the inaugural USTA League South Carolina Singles States at Wild Dunes Resort. Both women's teams won morning semifinals, then took the finals early afternoon. The Lakers, meanwhile, were taking care of business, winning their fourth straight match in the Senior Men's 4.0 round robin.
HHI's Singles Ladies defeated Lexington's Swinging Singles in the Adult 4.0 semis, then, although losing their first court of the weekend, came through with a 2-1 final over UPTA #2/Cleveland Park, which had upset UPTA #1 in the semis.
The SC Yacht Swinging Singles won their fifth straight 2-1 match in the Adult Women's 3.5 final, defeating UPTA #2/Brookstone Serves and Curves. Vi Hoisington and Carrie Vormohr each won two matches today to carry the day. Wins in those pesky third-set match tiebreaks were crucial to both teams' unbeaten runs.
The Hampton Lakers won twice Saturday, putting them on top of the Senior Men's 40s double round robin. Then they closed it out with a second win of the weekend over Grand Strand's Larry's Team, which both went to 2-1.
Meanwhile, in the Senior Men's 3.5s, the only two teams entered -- Spring Lake and Sun City -- squared off in the final of a best-of-three round robin. Sun City won the first at Sun City Friday; Spring Lake won the second at Spring Lake Saturday. In the decider this afternoon at Moss Creek Racquet Club, the teams split Courts 1 and 2 and Sun City won the third court on an injury retirement.
Singles are not very high on the HHI/CCTA league radar, but in the districts teams from the two areas won 10 of 11 team matches at Wild Dunes, then added six wins and one loss today. Seven of the nine levels that are being contested at Wild Dunes are from Adult leagues from throughout the state, including of two Adult teams from HHI and one from Coastal Carolina and one Senior team from CCTA.
Note: If you are searching for Singles States results on TennisLink, they are listed under "Other" toward the bottom of the long list of 2010 District Championships.
Here are the results and schedules as posted on sctennis.com and TennisLink for HHI and CCTA teams.

USTA League Level Coordinators Set for 2011 Spring Season
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- That cloud forming to the North is the looming 2010 yearend ratings due in a week or so, but USTA League local coordinators are not sitting under an umbrella clicking their mouses (mice?) and waiting. Pre-registration of teams for the Spring league is under way for all Adult and Senior levels. Captains have to take a deep breath, hope another 90,000 players don't get upgraded like last year and email their team intentions now.
