BROKEN NEWS-- updating: TENNIS E-News computer system has been down for transition from Hargray to Time-Warner ... and it still is a work in "progress". Thanks for your patience. You may try to email us at banana@hargray.com. That too will be changing because of the Hargray business plan: Raise rates, lower service.

It's Senior Playoff Time

Men's, Women's 3.5s Fighting for State Championship Slots

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Game on! USTA League South Carolina Senior State Championships are just a month away, and Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina teams are paring down to the diminishing number of slots available to area teams. This season will be the final one before the nationwide age-restructuring format that will go into effect in 2013.

The HHI Senior Men's 3.5 playoffs already are under way, with opening inter-flight round Wednesday advancing Sea Pines Ravens and Spring Lake Remnants to the level championship encounter next Wednesday the 18th. Also, the Women's 3.5 title match is set for the same day with Wexford Wackets playing at Port Royal Glory Girls. Both levels are hoping for at least one wildcard for States that will be played on Hilton Head Island May 19-21.

USTA Junior Team Tennis Registration Opens May 1 for Summer Season

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The 6th Spring/Summer season of Junior Team Tennis opens for on-line registration May 1 with play running mid-May through the end of June.  Local teams ages 12-18 compete on Beginner or Intermediate co-ed teams made up of Boys and Girls Singles, Boys and Girls Doubles, plus Mixed Doubles.  Intermediates and above have an opportunity to advance to State, Regional and National Championship.

Local teams include: Springfield GA, Beaufort, Bluffton, Spanish Wells, Wexford, Hilton Head Island Beach & Tennis and Rose Hill.  A team fee, uniform and membership (at a reduced junior rate) in USTA is required.

“This is a great opportunity to keep a racket in a child’s hand for more of the year, build team camaraderie and compete against players throughout the country," Coordinator and Bluffton Coach Bob Brown said. "We will find a team for you, and a limited number of scholarships are available.”

For additional information, visit www.sctennis.com and go to JTT page or www.blufftontennis.org or call Brown at 290-2833.

May 11-13 Event

7th Annual Bluffton Today Open Tournament Shifts to All-Junior Format

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The 7th annual Bluffton Today Open is shifting to an all-junior format this year but keeping its prime goal: benefiting Public Tennis Inc. projects in Bluffton and needy youth tennis players. The tournament will be played in its usual calendar slot: May 11-13.

In announcing the switch, Tournament Founder Robert Brown said: "Riding a trend of declining adult participation and growing youth involvement, we have decided to specialize in the Junior portion of the tournament". Rated adult categories had been played in the first six years of the annual championships.
"All the special touches and extras that have made this tourney will remain," Brown added, "including the Adult/Child tournament-within-a-tournament on Saturday night, and we will probably start on Friday night at Bluffton High to accommodate increased numbers of the kids.

"This event has always been about kids. Particularly special is the fact that we offer a Beginner Flight in addition to Intermediate so that all age and skill levels can have the tournament experience".    The reformatted BTO will include a novice flight. Perks for entrants include an original art commemorative T-shirt, goodie bag, Chic-Fil-A breakfast, prizes, guaranteed two rounds for each player, silent auction and racket demo.

More information is available through Brown at 290-2833 or at www.blufftontennis.org.

In Effect for HHI, CCTA

New State Rules Restrict USTA League Mixed Doubles Team Participation; Can't Play Same Level in HHI and CCTA
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- During the upcoming South Carolina Mixed Doubles League season, players may participate in the Mixed Adult, Mixed Senior and Mixed Super Senior divisions (e.g., 2.5, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, etc, as long as the players rating does not exceed the maximum rating for that level). However, players may only participate on one team for the same Division/Level statewide. That's a new 2012 state rule, confirmed by HHI Coordinator Jackie Reynecke and CCTA Coordinator Sally Harvey.

With the new regulation, as an example, a player may not play on two Mixed Adult 6.0 teams but may play on one Mixed Adult 6.0 team and one Mixed Senior 6.0 team and one Mixed Super Senior 6.0 team, if their age permits. A player cannot play on a Mixed 6.0 team on HHI and another Mixed 6.0 team in CCTA.

The coordinators explain that a player is bound to the first team on which he or she registers at each Division/Level, with additional team registrations resulting in defaults substituted for any matches played, and removal from additional team rosters without consideration of refund.

Team Preregistration Due Friday the 13th for CCTA Summer Mixed Adult & Senior Leagues;
BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Registration has opened for Summer Mixed Doubles in Coastal Carolina Tennis Association, with play to start in June on USTA levels 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0. This is the final year of current age divisions that will switch in the 2013 USTA age restructuring.

For this Summer, the divisions are: Adults…..18 & Up, Seniors….50 & Up.
Pre-registration forms for teams will be due Friday the 13th. For more information or a Team Pre-Registration Form, contact CCTA Mixed Coordinator Sally Harvey sharv@islc.net.
