Storm Cuts Short Night Feature Match
CHARLESTON SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Family Circle Cup semifinals are set: [5] Serena Williams vs. [2] Samantha Stosur and [9] Lucie Safarova vs. [14] Polona Hercog. "The match that should be the final" pits two high seeds who got to the semis by far different routes. The 2008 champion Williams was up 4-1 when 2009 winner Sabine Lisiki retired after falling and re-injuring an ankle. Meanwhile, 2010 winner Stosur started the day up 4-2 from a Thursday night rainout and won in three sets. Less than two hours later, the #2 seeded Australian was back on court against wildcard Venus Williams and won again in three.
The day was winter compared to Thursday's summer temps, and whipping wind created a plethora of miss-hit strokes. Stosur went up a break early in each of the first two sets, holding on to win the first 6-3, only to have Williams come back to take the second. The third set was Service Break City with returns of serve working well for both players. Williams was behind on her first three service games of the final set. She recovered to win the first two serves, but not the third. at that point, Stosur began mixing up her strokes and won two timely points on dropshots. The American served at 3-5 and doublefaulted to 15-40, than missed a forehand wide to end the match. Stoked by winning two three-setters in one day, Stosur will face Serena Williams in the semi.
Watch out for Polona! That was Thursday's TENNIS E-News alert after the defeat of #3 seed Marion Bartoli. Today, #13 seed and 2006 FCC champ Nadia Petrova got the message. The 14th-seeded Hercog sliced though Petrova like a hot knife on a cold day ... apt descriptions of Hercog's game and the weather. The Slovakian won the first five games, then the first set 6-1 and added a 6-2 second set. Her Saturday semifinal opponent will be lefty Czech Lucie Safarova, who dispatched #4 seed and 2008 finalist Vera Zvonareva of Russia 6-3, 6-3.

About the Family Circle Club Championships -- a mixed doubles competition among teams from Hilton Head Island, Charleston, Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill, Charlotte and Anderson ....
Information (including results) was hard to come by Thursday. Playing on combo mixed levels, the teams were scheduled for three rounds of eight-game pro sets that started about 4:30 p.m. Games won were accumulated to determine which two teams would advance to Friday evening finals. Competing in its group, the HHI team had 11 games, while Charlotte had 19 and Columbia and Myrtle Beach each had 32.
The teams, all treated to FCC tickets to the week, were interrupted by rain Thursday evening and play continued late today in each group. The top two teams are to play for the championship late today ... and enjoy a Club Champ player party at the FC Tennis Center. After the second of three group rounds, Group One is led by Myrtle Beach with 64 games, followed by Columbia with 58, Charleston Two with 37 and HHI with 23. In Group Two, Anderson leads with 64 games, then comes Charlotte with 52, Rock Hill with 60 and Charleston One with 30.
