PD Reunited 2-1 in Second

     SL Smash Gals Go 2-0 Into Final Day at Southern Section Championships in Mobile AL

        MOBILE AL (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Hilton Head Island's Spring Lake Smash Gals won a critical 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 court to stay unbeaten in the 2011 Combo Doubles Southern Section Championships. The Super Senior 7.5 Islanders' #3 court clinched the 2-1 win over Alabama/Gulf Shores to set up the Smash Gals against unbeaten Georgia/Southern Crescent today. Meanwhile, the Palmetto Dunes Reunited finished 2-1 in second place in its Adult Women's 9.5 group.

    Finals Day will determine champions in Adult, Senior and Super Senior divisions, representing the Southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

    On Saturday, the PD Reunited was scheduled for an early afternoon match Saturday, but apparently ran into weather problems. Then the PD 9.5s got tangled in a pair of three-setters and only won one of them in losing 2-1 to Louisiana/Baton Rouge. Today, the HHIslanders took three courts from Mississippi/Pine Belt, but it was not enough to win the grop. The Reunited (Michelle Clark, captain) defeated Tennessee/Nashville 2-1 Friday after the Smash Gals (Donna Smorol, captain) swept three two-setters from Louisiana/Shreveport.

    All teams are competing in group round robins, with group leaders to meet in Sunday championship finals.

Not-so-lucky, But Winners Celebrate

     Champions Crowned in the 29th annual “Luck of the Irish” Doubles at Palmetto Dunes TC

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The annual "Luck of the Irish" ran into bad weather luck Saturday, but life returned to somewhat normal at midday today -- if "normal" is 20 to 30 mph winds -- at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. The 167 entrants played down to finals that FINALly ended late in the afternoon. All categories were completed except the Women’s 3.5 final that will be played Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at PDTC.

    Adding to the usual tennis excitement this weekend is the incentive of the combo mixed doubles divisions that will send a Team Hilton Head Island to Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston to compete against those from other SC area during Family Circle Cup week. That team will consist of PD champions in four combo mixed divisions: 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0.

    Tournament Director Jackie Reynecke and the PD staff had their hands full on court and off, working to complete the draws today. Stay tuned for results as they are posted later this evening.

        FRIPP ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) -- Weather did its number on the USTA-sanctioned Fripp Island Spring Clay Court Championships Saturday, keeping tournament organizers up late reconfiguring the schedule to resume with much drier courts today. Matches that were interrupted by rain continued with the same format with which those started. However, the format will be adjusted for matches that start today.

Statewide Program

     10 & Under High Performance All-Day Camp Set for Saturday at Rose Hill

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- USTA South Carolina will host a High Performance Training Camp for 10 & Under kids Saturday at the Tennisclub of the LowCountry at Rose Hill. TCL co-owner and coach Butch Staples and USTA Player Development Chair Brian Parkkonen will conduct the camp from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $28 per player, which includes snacks, player gift and lunch for parents and players. Registration deadline is Tuesday midnight.

    Players must register online for the camp by going to www.sctennis.com and, under News and Headlines, selecting 10 U High Performance tab and then the link to the Bluffton event site.

    A second camp session will be conducted Sunday at the new Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.

378 Matches Just on Monday

     Intercollegiate Spring Break Team Schedule -- First Full Week Under Way

        HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- In what an Island Packet editorial once described as the annual "invasion" of college tennis teams, the 2012 influx is under way and this week will find courts (mostly hard ones) crammed from early morning to evening with dual matches. Two exhibitions are scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. All matches and exhibitions are open free to spectators.

    What was started in the mid-1980s by Tennisaction Hilton Head Island has evolved into two separate Spring Break entities -- one headquartered at HHI Beach & Tennis Resort and the second at the Professional Tennis Registry headquarters in Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club.

    Each team match consists of six singles and three doubles. The format varies depending on the college's NCAA division and the number of courts available at the individual match sites. Given the general format, the 42 team dual matches set for Monday will involved 252 singles matches and 126 doubles. Yes, that's 378 matches just on Monday. Here are the matches set for this week.
