89 Teams Competing

PR Herricanes, SL Remnants, PR Glory Girls, SC Sassy Slicers 2-0 at Senior States

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Three Hilton Head Island teams and one from Coastal Carolina are 2-0 after Day One action in the USTA League South Carolina Senior State Championships. Eight other HHI/CCTA teams are 1-1 going into today's final day of in-group round robins that will determine which advance to Monday morning semifinals and midday finals.

More than 800 players on 89 teams are competing, with Sea Pines Racquet Club as headquarters site and matches also being played at Palmetto Dunes, South Beach, Sea Pines CC, Long Cove and Country Club of HH. Championships will be crowned in Men's and Women's 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 levels.

Each of the area 2-0 teams will play once today -- Women's 4.0 Port Royal Herricanes, Men's 3.5 Spring Lake Remnants, Women's 3.5 Port Royal Glory Girls and Women's 3.0 Sun City Sassy Slicers. While aiming for wins, even if that doesn't happen, several wildcards are available to advance to Monday semifinals. All are aiming to advance to the Southern Section Championships that will be played in late July in Mobile AL.

The influx of more than 1,000 players, coaches, spouses, significant others and such will again be a boon to HHI clubs, lodging and restaurant businesses as well as shopping areas. A financial-impact study of the Senior Championships was conducted several years ago by USC-Beaufort that put a $1.4 million tab on business gain.

Captains had to dodge raindrops to pick up their weekend packets late afternoon Friday at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center, then join their players their pickup "lunch" bags for a party that was interrupted bigtime by the late day downpours. The "entertainment" -- Hilton Head Island Professional Tennis League fourth week matches -- was 90 minutes late getting started, but it did go on. (story below)

Here is how it stacks up for Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina area level champions and wildcards:

Pros' Friday Night Lights

Rain, Rain Went Away; HHI Pro League Matches Started To Play; Players World Holds On to #1 Spot

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via Lee Holyoak Midnight Email) -- Build 'em (tennis courts) and they will come; dry them and they will play. Ah, yes, the fifth week of the Coral Resorts HHI Professional Tennis League got a bit of a late start Friday night, with few players or spectators expecting the matches would get in at all. The 6 p.m. "exhibition" for the visiting Super Senior States players was a show of HHI pros rolling and toweling and rolling and toweling courts.

With the corps of Dolphins soaking up the puddles, the pro matches went on at 7:30-7:45 under the lights but surprisingly also a bright setting sun. About 75 to 100 fans were on hand. Again, the level play was better than many spectators expected, bringing comments like "They warm up much better than I play" and, after one fast-action volley point, "I can't even WATCH that fast."

A pair of straight-set wins enabled Players World of Sports to stay in first place with a 4-1 record. Given the late start, players must have wanted to get it done, in that it was the first Friday Night Lights without a third-set match tiebreak having to decide an outcome.

Next week, the pros will move their action to Rose Hill, for matches at the newly opened Tennisclub of the Low Country (TLC).  (schedule below).

    Here are Friday's results:

Island Family Dental 3, Mattress Firm 0

    Ct. 1 -- Thomas Richter/Eric Wammock (Mattress Firm) vs. Tom Shimada/Lee Holyoak; Shimada/Holyoak won 7-6, 6-3

    Ct. 2 -- Patrick Mason/Nikki Kunz (Mattress Firm) vs. Tom Coulton/Royce Silvan; Coulton/Silvan won 6-2, 6-4

    Ct. 3 -- Paul Rankin/Jeremiah Dye (Mattress Firm) vs. Mark Sheaffer/Glenn Sheaffer; Sheaffer/Sheaffer won 6-2; 6-0

Players World of Sports 2,
Spinnaker Resorts 1

    Ct. 1 -- Christian Coley/Marcos Ondruska (Spinnaker Resorts) vs. Derrick Spice/Mike Sutcliffe; Coley/Ondruska won 6-1, 7-5

    Ct. 2 -- Rohan Wadehra/Clint Van Aswegen (Spinnaker Resorts) vs. Matt Wuller/Danny Nash; Wuller/Nash won 7-5, 7-6

    Ct. 3 -- Bobby Tillison/Emile Dumas (Spinnaker Resorts) vs. Jolene Watanabe/Robert Seferian; Watanabe/Seferian won 6-1, 7-5
